Manchester United 2-0 Hull City: Three things we learnt

Wayne Rooney has experienced a mixed week

The Manchester United captain has received a lot of praise this week and rightly so after joining Sir Bobby Charlton as the club’s leading scorer. He has endured some criticism during his time at Old Trafford, but there is no doubting his quality and his achievement has moved him into folklore at the club. Rooney may have been able to achieve more in his career had he looked after himself better, but he is one of the best players that we have seen in the Premier League and it will be great to see him move ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton in the coming weeks.

However, this evening showed why he may not have a long term future at the club. Manchester United have been great to watch in attack over recent weeks, but Rooney slows down their build-up play and he has lost the dynamism that he once had. It might be the right time for both to move on at the end of the season, once Rooney has scored one more time to move ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton. United are now a better side without Rooney and would benefit from moving him off the pay-roll, while he could move to a club that would offer him regular first-team football, something he may need before the 2018 World Cup.
