There are reasons to be optimistic for Hull
They worked hard off the ball as they consistently did under Mike Phelan, but there was more of a threat in attack. Although they only managed six shots, their build-up play was much better and that will only continue to improve under the new manager. Considering they started with two midfielders in their back four, Hull competed well and nearly came away from the first leg with only a one-goal deficit. There is still a chance for them to turn this one around in the second leg, although if you were a betting man, you would expect Manchester United to have too much.
Although there are reasons to be optimistic about the future, it is imperative that Hull City release funds for business to be done this month. This squad isn’t good enough for survival and Marco Silva needs to be given a fighting chance of keeping the Tigers up. Hull have done well to attract a manager with his CV, but they must now back him or they will continue to fall towards the Championship. There is a core of a good team and the return of Abel Hernandez has provided a boost, but more must be done if they are to stay up.
