Manchester United 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur: Three things we learnt
Manchester United managed to deliver the performance that earned a crucial three points as they attempt to close the gap to the leading pack. This was seen as a must win for the Red Devils as they came up against the team directly above them. Tottenham could have went nine points clear of United with a win and the table would have looked bleak for Jose Mourinho’s men. For the away side, they will be disappointed with their performance, especially in attack and there are problems for Mauricio Pochettino to solve if they are to qualify for the Champions League for a second year running. Here are three things that we learned:
Paul Pogba is growing into his role in this United side
The world’s most expensive player has been struggling to live up to his hype since signing for Manchester United, but a change in Mourinho’s approach is helping to get the best from the Frenchman. Since the Manchester United boss moved Pogba to a number ten role, with Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick playing as a two behind him and it is working. The former Juventus midfielder has been provided with an opportunity to express himself in attack and he is beginning to influence matches more.
Against Tottenham, Pogba was making the driving forward runs that we came accustomed to while he was at Juventus and he was causing lots of problems. He almost gave his side the lead in only the second minute, but he was prevented by his international team-mate Hugo Lloris. Meanwhile, in the second half he hit the bar with a superb free kick. It has been a mixed start for Pogba, but he can take the positives from this performance and kick on from here.
