Manchester United round-up: £45million deal likely for winger; new contract for Spaniard; bid for defensive duo

Manchester United could be set for a breakthrough in their pursuit of Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, according to The Guardian. They believe that the Red Devils value the Croatian at £40 million, whilst the Serie A club are holding out for £49 million. A £45 million compromise now looks the most likely outcome.

Perisic could make a move to Manchester in time to join the first team squad on their pre-season tour of the US, though he has already returned to action with Inter Milan as they begin their preparations for 2017/18. However, it seems that he could strengthen Jose Mourinho’s attacking options instead.

He will join Ander Herrera in the Old Trafford ranks if he does make the move after the Spaniard made it clear that he would not be interested in any potential move away amid interest from Barcelona. The Daily Star say that the influential midfielder will be rewarded with a new contract worth £175,000 per week.

The deal will extend his stay in Manchester to 2021, an additional three years on his current £100,000 per week agreement. Having become a key player under Jose Mourinho with his dominant displays last season, it is hard to argue that he would not be worth every penny of the new deal.

Two players who could be set for less glamorous surroundings are Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, as the Mirror say that West Bromwich Albion’s Tony Pulis is plotting an ambitious move for the duo. They face uncertainty over their role in the United squad after the signing of Victor Lindelof earlier this summer.

Both players received criticism from Mourinho over their fitness at times last season and may doubt their potential importance, but it remains to be seen if the Portuguese manager would allow them to leave. Even then, it seems unlikely that West Brom would be able to afford either player unless United offer them out at a low price.
