Manchester City transfer: Guardiola eyes 30-year-old as Kane alternative

Manchester City will turn their attentions to Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann if they can’t prise Harry Kane away from Tottenham. The France international is set to be allowed to leave as the Catalan giants aim to raise funds.

The Citizens are still plotting a swoop in Tottenham. However, Daniel Levy is expected to stand firm on a £150 million valuation, as he believes he has the best centre-forward in world football.

That could deter City who want to complete a quick deal. Guardiola has previously said he won’t become embroiled in a summer-long saga for the Tottenham talisman.

As a result, he is plotting contingency plans. Griezmann has been at Barcelona since 2019 when he checked in from Atletico Madrid for a fee in excess of £100 million.

Now, it is claimed by Mundo Deportivo that the France international will be allowed to leave this summer. Barcelona are experiencing financial difficulties and need to raise some funds.

It is also claimed that City could offer Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva or Joao Cancelo in a bid to get a deal for Griezmann over the line this summer.

Currently, the man with 94 caps for his country earns in the region of £600,000-a-week. As a result, signing him won’t come easily, but Griezmann is currently on the radar of City.

Griezmann to City seems odd

There’s no doubting that the Barcelona man would be a decent addition to the ranks, but he’d be an expensive alternative to Kane.

Although a transfer fee could be smaller, his wage demands would be nowhere like what the Tottenham man would expect.

Nor do the players play in the same position. Griezmann typically plays in a three-pronged attack behind the centre-forward, making him an intriguing addition for City.

At 30 he is three years the senior of Kane too, meaning he would be more of a short-term fix for the Citizens.

Griezmann has scored 156 goals in 392 appearances in La Liga and it’s clear he’s an exceptional footballer.

Whether he’s right for City, however, remains to be seen.
