Manchester City to rival Liverpool for Alessandro Bastoni transfer, according to reports

Manchester City have reportedly revived their interest in Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni.

According to Corriere Dello Sport via Sempre Inter, the Premier League champions are keeping tabs on the Italy international, with the report stating that Pep Guardiola is ‘an important admirer’ of the young centre-back, who was a mainstay in Antonio Conte’s Inter side that won the Serie A title this season.

City have been linked with Bastoni in the past, with a report from FC Inter 1908 even suggesting that the Manchester club have already had a €60m (£51.7m) bid rejected for the Inter defender, who this week has also been rumoured as a target for Liverpool according to Italian publication Leggo.

As per the Corriere Dello Sport report, Inter are looking to sell at least two first-team players this summer in an attempt to both lower the club’s wage bill as well as balance the books, with the Milanese giants looking for at least $200m in finances as reported by the Financial Times in February.

TBR View: Bastoni and Ruben Dias partnership could become City’s Vidic and Ferdinand

If there’s one thing that can be attributed to City’s impressive title win this season, it will be the formation of the centre-back partnership between John Stones and summer signing Ruben Dias. Yet with Bastoni, Guardiola’s defence could become even better.

The Italian defender is one of the most highly centre-backs to emerge from the country for quite some time, with Roberto Mancini predicting that Bastoni could become the next Giorgio Chiellini as per Football Italia, and after this season with Inter, the 22-year-old is well on course.

And alongside a towering defensive presence like Dias, who is the favourite to win this season’s PFA Player of the Year award, City could have their version of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, a centre-back duo that is often regarded as one of the best in Premier League history.
