Manchester City star who has covered 55km at Euro 2020 deserves respect
Raheem Sterling went into Euro 2020 as the name on everyone’s lips and not in a positive way. Many doubted Gareth Southgate’s love for him and feared the England boss was making a huge mistake over the Manchester City man.
As England battled into the final of Euro 2020, nobody was left in doubt over Sterling’s massive impact on this determined and classy Three Lions team.
Sterling was utterly brilliant. For 120 minutes he showcased exactly what playing for England should be all about. The City star never stopped running, covering every blade of the Wembley turf and winning the penalty which allowed Harry Kane to seal the victory.
Sterling has often divided opinion. His somewhat sporadic form for City had plenty of England fans clamouring for Southgate to call on other options for Euro 2020.
The 26-year-old has justified his selection though. He’s scored three times in the tournament and right now, he must be a contender for Player of the Tournament.
Who Scored show just how useful he was last night. He had six shots with half of them on target, completed nine successful dribbles and was fouled three times.
Sterling has also run 55.4km during the tournament. That is the eleventh best in the whole competition and showcases just how hard he works for his team.
City fans will be buzzing with Sterling form for England
The versatile winger did score 14 goals and claim 12 assists last season, although he was pretty inconsistent. As a result, his form at the Euros will be delighting the City fan base and Pep Guardiola.
His form for England has been a joy to behold and on Sunday more history could be created by the talented player.
Southgate has really got this current crop playing. The style of football England have played has often been pragmatic but in Sterling, England have a breathtaking outlet that terrorises defenders.
His form bodes well for City. For those Three Lions supporters who dared to doubt him, it’s time to put some respect on his name.
