BBC Sport announced yesterday afternoon that Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been awarded a new one-year deal at the club after a string of impressive performances this campaign.
The 34-year-old’s contract at the Etihad was set to run out at the end of the season but, after spearheading City’s top-four finish in the climax to the season, he’s been given a year’s extension.
Talking to Manchester City’s official website, Toure said:
“I’m delighted. I told myself the journey at City is not done and when I received a call from Txiki (Begiristain) and talked to the manager I was very delighted.
“I want to win trophies, that’s very important to me. I want to enjoy it at this age and remaining here is a massive thing. It’ s a great club, going in the right direction with new players who are coming in.”
News of a contract extension represents a huge turnaround from the beginning of the season, when Toure didn’t feature in the league until November after a fall-out with incoming boss Pep Guardiola.
In further positive news for the club, The Sun have reported that a deal for Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy has been agreed ahead of a £39.8 million move to Manchester City.
It is believed that the French left-back has agreed terms of £100,000-per-week and will join the club on a four-year deal, acting as a like-for-like replacement for the released Gael Clichy.
The Sun reports that a source close to Manchester City said:
“Everything was agreed between the two clubs late on Thursday night. Mendy and City had already agreed terms. It will be official once he’s done his duties with France.”
The 22-year-old has enjoyed a promising season for Monaco, helping them win the Ligue One title and reach the Champions League semi-finals, and Pep Guardiola has wasted no time in pouncing.
Mendy is now set to become Manchester City’s third signing of the summer behind Monaco teammate Bernardo Silva and Benfica’s Ederson Moraes, who BBC Sport claim is on the verge of agreeing terms.
Away from transfer affairs, under-fire goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has insisted that his future remains at Manchester City despite the imminent signing of Ederson.
Despite Willy Caballero being released during a mass clear-out last week, the arrival of the Benfica goalkeeper would ensure that Bravo loses his status as City’s number one heading into next season.
Yet he remained defiant whilst speaking to AS Chile, and the 34-year-old said:
“My future is still tied to City for much longer. From the day I arrived at the club, I knew what was going to happen, which is what is happening now.
“You always have competition at this level. It has happened to me in Colo Colo, in the national team, in Real Sociedad, in Barcelona and in City.
“It has been a year not as I expected, but I hope the next one is much better.”
Bravo has come under-fire for underwhelming and erratic displays during his debut season in the Premier League, losing his number one status to Willy Caballero before picking up a serious injury.
