Lens have been one of the feel-good stories of the year in Europe, with the northern French club having a sensational season in Ligue 1 after being promoted from Ligue 2 last campaign, with Clauss one of the club’s best-performing players with the wing-back hitting three goals and six assists in 32 league appearances.

Clauss has impressed so much that the former Arminia Bielefeld defender is currently rated by L’Equipe as the ‘best outfield player’ of the season in the division as per Ligue 1’s official website, with the French sports daily notorious for their strict player ratings, with only 11 players ever receiving a perfect 10/10 rating for a performance in the history of the outlet’s publication.

TBR View: Interest in Clauss gives us a glimpse to City’s transfer plans and club direction

It would be an understatement to say that City are no strangers to the transfer market, yet when it comes to making signings, the Manchester-based club tends to lean towards recruiting established players from big-name clubs, which is what makes this interest in Clauss so interesting.

At 28, the French defender is at the peak of his career and coming off the back of his first big season in a top division, with Lens set to claim a top-six spot in Ligue 1, and City’s interest in Clauss could hint that the Premier League side are looking at untraditional clubs for summer signings this year, and that Pep Guardiola is looking for quality no matter their current location.
