Manchester City reportedly considering £51.7m move for left-back Alex Grimaldo
Manchester City are reportedly keeping an eye on Benfica defender Alex Grimaldo ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to Madrid-based publication La Razon, City are considering a move for Grimaldo as Pep Guardiola aims to solidify the left-back spot in the Manchester XI, with the Premier League leaders sharing the role with numerous players this season. The report also states that Atletico Madrid fullback Renan Lodi is also an option for the English side this summer.
The left-back position has long been an awkward role for Guardiola to fill during his tenure as City manager, with Benjamin Mendy, a £52m signing from AS Monaco in the summer of 2017 as reported by BBC Sport, having his career hampered with injuries as the likes of Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko have operated in the area over the years.
Grimaldo, who was once a target for Manchester United as reported by the Sun, is said to have a release clause of €60m (£51.7m) as reported by Record via Sports Illustrated, with the 25-year-old defender asserting himself as one of the top fullbacks in Portugal after joining from Barcelona in 2015.
TBR View: Grimaldo signing could solve City’s long-term problems at left-back
Manchester City’s spending on defenders has been nothing short of ridiculous in recent years, with figures from Transfermarkt showing that the Premier League club have spent well over £500m on that area of the pitch alone since 2008, but Grimaldo could be the player that ends this free-spending mentality on the left-back position, in particular.
The Spanish defender has been exceptional for Benfica since taking the risk of leaving Barcelona in 2015 in search of regular first-team football, and after six years with the Portuguese giants, Grimaldo is ready for the next step up in his career, and with the likes of Ruben Dias flourishing with City, the motivation could be there for the fullback to make the leap to the Premier League if the offer comes in.
