Manchester City could have to look elsewhere to replace Sergio Aguero, with Inter forward Lautaro Martinez confirming he is staying in Italy.

City were said to be keen on signing the Argentinian star. With Aguero’s career seemingly coming to an end at The Etihad, Martinez had reportedly been identified as the ideal replacement.

However, in an interview with Italian media this week, Martinez has confirmed his future will be with Inter Milan. That should, in theory, ensure City have to move on, while Barcelona will also be disappointed.

Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves has previously backed City’s pursuit of Martinez.

“He’s got everything. He’s skilful, a lethal finisher. He’s got everything – [he’s just] 22 years old. He’s the type of player whether at Barcelona or Manchester City they’re going to get a really special player,” Hargreaves commented.

City, then, could now look to move onto other targets as Pep Guardiola seeks a new striker this summer. Aguero has suffered with injuries, while Gabriel Jesus has proved to be an inconsistent replacement.

Not that it’s hindered City. Guardiola is set to guide his team to another league title at a canter.

TBR View: Martinez is perfect, City need to keep tabs on this into the future

Martinez might be staying put for now but this shouldn’t mean the door is completely closed. He’s still young enough to have his success in Milan then seek a move away to prove himself elsewhere.

The Argentine would have been perfect to replace Aguero in fairness. Not that it’s an easy feat, but he does look to have all the tools to do such a thing.

City should keep their noses in this one. You never know what’s round the corner in football, meaning Martinez could well be open to a move in the future.
