Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has gained enormous praise from Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final second leg – and City fans have reacted, by wanting Dembele signed.
Mahrez, 30, has been sensational for City this season. The Algeria star has laid on a whopping 19 goal involvements in 44 games this season in all competitions, but has only completed 90 minutes in half of those matches.
It is an impressive output from Mahrez, who also has competition from the likes of Ferran Torres, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva. But his long-term future at Man City might be in doubt, given he is now 30.
So, City might need a new wide man in the coming couple of transfer windows and 23-year-old Dembele could be perfect. While he has had injury issues, the World Cup winner has impressed in the 40 outings he has clocked up.
Speaking to BeIN Sports, Dembele spoke about Mahrez and raved about the Manchester City ace – explaining how difficult it is for defenders to come up against the former Leicester star, and Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane.
“I like to watch the matches of Mahrez, Leroy Sané. Mahrez he likes the sole, and every time I watch City games it’s amazing. Even with Algeria it is incredible. When he comes one against one against you, it’s difficult,” Dembele said.
Mahrez, along with the rest of the Manchester City squad, will be preparing for what is likely to be considered their most-important match of the season on Tuesday night – as City take on PSG in their second semi-final leg.
Boasting a 2-1 lead from the first leg, in which Mahrez curled a brilliant free-kick into the bottom corner to win in Paris and put City firmly in the driving seat, Pep Guardiola’s men will be desperate to finally win in Europe.
With the Carabao Cup sorted and the Premier League all but done, City will be desperate to win the treble and such success will attract the best come the summer window. Dembele, meanwhile, could be allowed to leave Barcelona.
While he has rejuvenated his form, he has also stated that there are no contract talks on the horizon – during an interview with Marca. The £97million (Sky Sports) signing could be allowed to leave if the right price is met.
City could do a lot worse than taking a look at Dembele, given the questionable form of Torres and Sterling this season. Clearly, Dembele has enormous talent and just needs the right manager – and club – to unlock that again.
City fans reacted to his comments regarding Mahrez ahead of Tuesday’s match, and many have urged City to take a look at the former Dortmund star. Multiple fans have even suggested that City should offer a swap involving Sterling.
