Manchester City were beaten 3-1 at Anfield by Liverpool, who have opened up a nine-point gap between themselves and the reigning champions in the Premier League.
The Reds produced a brilliant performance against Pep Guardiola’ side to send a real message, and City have slipped to fourth in the table with Leicester City and Chelsea both winning.
City played some nice football at times and did create chances, but were undone by poor defending.
With no Ederson and Aymeric Laporte, the Citizens looked very shaky at the back against a Liverpool team always willing to press.
Making his third straight Premier League start on Sunday was John Stones, who appears to have nudged ahead of Nicolas Otamendi in the pecking order.
The 2016 signing from Everton had a particularly tough afternoon, unusually giving the ball away at times and failing to assert authority alongside Fernandinho.
Man City fans react
Although the likes of Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero weren’t on it as usual, they still managed to create chances, meaning the were spared the brunt of the criticism.
Given the ease at which Liverpool were able to score, some City fans targeted Stones after the game:
John Stones career over at City. At best he is a 3rd choice CB.
We need to move on. If he wasn’t English Pep would have sold him in the summer.

I think he should be binned off at the next possible opportunity. Too timid, lacks physicality and not assertive enough in big moments of the game. He’s not a kid anymore and I don’t see a genuine improvement over the last 2 seasons.

He’s a good back up until he makes that step up everyone’s been expecting him to do but STILL hasn’t happened yet. New quality CB needed sell Otta, keep stones till Garcia, bellis ready.

I have kittens when anyone runs at him

Unfortunately I think you are right. I had such high hopes when we signed him but I think the injuries have taken their toll.

Gundo was decent stones was not good

Another stones disasterclass

I’m honestly disgusted with the result but I’m not gonna come on here and moan, no excuses LFC deserved to win. Without Laporte next to Stones he’s average. We obviously suffered with lots of injuries, but we missed many chances. We get to a quick start by putting the ball in net

It’s to good Cos stones anticipates nothing and his positioning is Jones level and Kyle Walker was rightly called out by Rio 2 year ago for clicking off

Defo should’ve brought in a Vincent Kompany replacement in the summer. Love Stones but he’s not good enough and Otamendi, well… https://t.co/I5f0aMVA4U

Expect Gundo will get the usual flak for City losing but I thought he had a good game. That defence was always going to cause us problems though – Stones always looks a couple of seconds behind the game & Ferna (good player as he is) was always only going to be makeshift #MCFC
