Manchester City fans have lavished departing defender Eric Garcia with praise following from reports that the Spanish centre-back’s request to leave last summer played a role in John Stones staying with the club.
According to the Athletic, Pep Guardiola’s side were ready to ship off Stones in the summer of 2020 after failing to nail down a first-team spot in the starting XI, but Garcia’s request to leave for FC Barcelona, a transfer which is now wrapped up as reported by Fabrizio Romano, derailed these initial plans, and 12 months on, the decision was a blessing in disguise.

Stones has enjoyed a renaissance of a season with City this campaign, with the England international forming a centre-back partnership with Ruben Dias that has conceded the least goals in the Premier League this year and has been a major reason as to why the Manchester side are on the verge of a fifth league title, and supporters on social media were amazed on Garcia’s role with the former Everton defender’s resurgence.
Here’s what some City fans had to say on Twitter about Garcia inadvertently helping Stones find his form again…
