Oleksandr Zinchenko captained his country for the first time on Wednesday evening as Ukraine managed to secure an away point against France in 2022 World Cup qualifying – to the delight of Manchester City fans on Twitter.
The left-back, 24, came into the match having already earned 35 caps for his country and in what was his 36th, he met with Hugo Lloris in the centre circle at the start of the match with the captain’s armband on.
A huge honour for Zinchenko, who could also surpass 100 appearances for Manchester City in all competitions this season – with just 10 matches to go before he reaches three figures. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring.
The Barcelona attacker showed all what he is capable of, picking the ball up on the point of the penalty area and inexplicably curling a gorgeous effort into the far corner. An own goal, though, saw Ukraine nab a point.
A shot that was clearly going wide deflected past Tottenham skipper Lloris off of Paris Saint-Germain defender Presnel Kimpembe. A wonderful performance from Ukraine, who limited France to just a handful of chances.
Plenty of Manchester City fans reacted on Twitter to Zinchenko being handed the captain’s armband by applauding their £20,000-a-week (Spotrac) star. City supporters praised their left-footed defender.
