Manchester City fans react as Eric Garcia stars against Preston

Many Manchester City fans are feeling a little better about the club’s defensive crisis after youngster Eric Garcia put in a commanding performance against Preston in the Carabao Cup.

Pep Guardiola put his faith in the 18-year-old at centre-half, and the Spaniard delivered at Deepdale.

The former Barcelona starlet was near enough perfect in possession (96% accuracy, via FootballTalentScout) and even helped himself to an assist against the Championship outfit, and his defensive work was solid too – he made two tackles, two interceptions and five clearances.

Garcia’s performance alongside the assured 17-year-old debutant Taylor Harwood-Bellis is a huge boost for City, who have lost Aymeric Laporte for the foreseeable future thanks to a knee injury.

John Stones is also sidelined, and there’s now a real chance for the youngster to get some minutes under his belt.

Fernandinho will likely be Pep Guardiola’s go-to alongside Nicolas Otamendi, but Garcia has at least shown he is ready to deputise.

Citizens supporters were blown away by the maturity of Garcia’s performance, which came just days after Guardiola sang his praises, calling him ‘a clever guy’ who ‘pays plenty of attention’ (Manchester Evening News).
