Manchester City fans react as Douglas Luiz reportedly nears Aston Villa move

Aston Villa are reportedly closing in on a move to sign Manchester City midfielder Douglas Luiz in a deal believed to be worth £15million – and City fans are happy with the deal, while some have discussed a buyback clause.

BBC Sport reported that the 21-year-old midfielder has agreed a move to Aston Villa from Manchester City, after spending the past two seasons on loan at La Liga side Girona – clocking up 46 appearances for the Spanish side.

Luiz struggled to get a work permit at Manchester City following his move from Vasco da Gama, meaning he had to go out on loan to Spain. But a move to Villa is expected to see him obtain a working Visa.

That is because the promise of more game time at Villa Park, and the transfer fee, are said to help the Brazil Under-23 international. The signing of Luiz also covers a hole in the Villa midfield.

After offloading Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak earlier this summer on free transfers, Villa have needed to bring in a number four. Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips has been linked, but Luiz could be the man to fill the void.

Manchester City, meanwhile, boast Fernandinho, Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan in the first team so even if Luiz did obtain a permit, his chances of first-team football are unlikely.

Manchester City fans reacted on Twitter to the reported news that Villa could be about to sign Luiz, and many fans are happy to see him go – whereas others want a buyback clause inserted in his deal.
