Manchester City are reportedly battling both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool for Schalke teenager Matthew Hoppe, as Premier League clubs look to take advantage of Schalke’s financial crisis – and City supporters have reacted on Twitter.
Schalke look destined to be relegated at the end of the season as they remain rock bottom of the German Bundesliga, even despite the signings of Arsenal defenders Shkodran Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac. Hoppe, though, has been a rare shining light.
The 19-year-old American has come into the side and impressed in the Bundesliga, netting a hat-trick in Schalke’s only win of the season – in which they beat Hoffenheim 4-0. He has five goals in 11 Bundesliga outings this season.

His form has not gone unnoticed. Schalke and other German clubs are beginning to use the American scouting pool to their advantage, with Schalke bringing through Weston McKennie. Gio Reyna and Christian Pulisic have starred for Dortmund.
Website 90Min claim Hoppe has been identified as a potential summer addition by Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City. He has a contract until the summer of 2023, and it remains to be seen how much he would cost.
Schalke do not want to sell Hoppe but given the club have recorded debts of £175million, they may have to cash in. City supporters have reacted on Twitter and many are keen to see him arrive at The Etihad.
