Manchester City fans discuss Leroy Sane’s performance for Bayern Munich

Leroy Sane and Bayern Munich suffered a 3-2 home defeat in the first leg of their Champions League quater-final clash on Wednesday – and Man City fans have reacted on Twitter to the German winger’s display, and some want him to come home.

Probably the biggest tie of the round, Bayern hosted Mauricio Pochettino’s side at the Allianz Arena but were without Robert Lewandowski. Hansi Flick combined Sane with Eric Choupo-Moting and Kingsley Coman up top, but failed to prevent defeat.

Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring as a PSG break saw Mbappe smash an effort straight at Manuel Neuer, only for the German goalkeeper to allow the ball to squeeze past him. PSG put themselves 2-0 ahead when Marquinihos finished superbly.

A delightful ball from Neymar, his second assist of the night, allowed Marquinihos to finish from close range – but ex-Stoke striker Choupo-Moting responded before half-time, heading a brilliant cross from Benjamin Pavard into the back of the net.

Thomas Muller made it 2-2 after a cross from Joshua Kimmich, but PSG won the match when Mbappe took the game by the scruff of the neck – cutting inside from the left and firing a low effort past Neuer at the German’s near post.

But Sane was non-existent. No goals, no assists and although he lasted 90 minutes, Bayern’s number 10 had little impact on the match. Indeed, it has hardly been the most profitable of seasons for the winger – who cost Bayern £55million (Independent).

This season, the German has scored just eight goals in 35 league and cup appearances for Bayern following his move from Manchester City to Bayern. He has laid on 11 assists, but it is far below the standard expected of the 25-year-old.

His performance on Wednesday night summed up his season – good in glimpses but eventually ineffective. It might be that he spent the majority of the 2019-20 season on the sidelines through injury, but his form has been blow his 2018-19 stats.

In a City shirt, the German had a hand in 34 goals during 47 games – scoring 16 and creating 18. But this season, he has only just surpassed that amount of goal involvements in a Bayern shirt. When all are fit, Sane might not even start.

Surely, Flick would prefer the likes of Serge Gnabry and Coman on the flanks – as well as boasting Thomas Muller and even Alphonso Davies, who can play out wide but is normally used at left-back. He has a contract at Bayern until the summer of 2025.

City fans reacted on Twitter to Sane’s performance for Bayern and many are somewhat sympathetic towards their former winger. Many have suggested that Sane should return to The Etihad, suggesting that City suits him better.

Some City supporters questioned the usage of Sane on the right flank, when he starred for Guardiola’s side on the left.
