Report: Guardiola ready to gazump Liverpool and bid for 'amazing' player this summer
Liverpool might be hoping they can sign Kalvin Phillips from Leeds this summer, but old nemesis, Pep Guardiola, could ruin the party.
Reports have claimed that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Phillips’ situation at Leeds. The England midfielder hasn’t yet penned fresh terms or come out and committed himself to the Elland Road cause. Of course, Leeds staying up has increased their hopes of keeping Phillips.
However, 90Min have reported today that Manchester City are now preparing to make a bid for Phillips. It’s claimed that Pep Guardiola and City’s scouts are super impressed with how Phillips has progressed with Leeds, and see him as ideal in their own midfield.
Naturally, Leeds will want big money for a player who Jose Mourinho once dubbed as ‘amazing‘. Phillips is the main man in midfield, a crowd favourite, and also has his own affinity to the club as well. If City do want the snatch him from Elland Road, then they’ll know a big sum will be required.
City have already moved to sign Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez this summer. They are expected to make more signings, too, with a number of players also set to depart The Etihad.
TBR’s View: Kalvin Phillips Would Need To Think Hard About Manchester City Move
Out of both Liverpool and City, you’d have to say Phillips looks more suited to Liverpool. Their ageing midfield means he might get more chances, while at City, he’d have to dislodge Rodri in the middle and Pep rarely plays with two holding.
Obviously, Fabinho is in his position at Anfield. But Jurgen Klopp likes to keep his midfield fresh and you can see Phillips playing a role similar to that which Thiago or Henderson does right now.
Regardless, Leeds will want big money. If they do sell Phillips, they need well compensating.
