What now for Celtic and Scottish football?
Brendan Rodgers probably exceeded the expectations of many on-lookers north of the boarder by guiding Celtic into the Champions League group stage and it was always going to be a challenge to progress out of a pool containing Manchester City and Barcelona.
Whilst The Hoops may have finished bottom of Group C they have certainly have demonstrated progress since their seven-goal hammering against Barcelona in the first round of fixtures and they certainly gave another good account of themselves at the Etihad. On Tuesday evening they looked confident, composed and offered a genuine attacking threat which quite easily could have seen them snatch all three points.
However, the fact remains that Celtic have been eliminated from the Champions League without winning a game and, in the process, missed out on the chance to drop into the Europa League. With no European football to look forward to in the New Year Rodgers will now turn his attention to securing a domestic treble and it looks increasingly unlikely that any of the current clubs in Scotland’s top-flight possess the quality or finances to provide a genuine challenge.
With Celtic so far ahead of other teams domestically, yet seemingly still some way short of being a prominent European power, what now for Scottish football in general?
