Manager says Newcastle-linked 6ft 4in prodigy is 'exceptional', worth at least £10m
A player recently linked with Newcastle United has previously been described as “exceptional” by his manager, who believes he is “absolutely” worth at least £10million.
According to Chronicle Live, the Magpies have three promising EFL youngsters on the radar, one of which is Ipswich Town defender Luke Woolfenden.
Woolfenden came through the ranks at Portman Road and has made his breakthrough this season after loan stints at Bromley and Swindon Town.
Ipswich boss Paul Lambert admitted that the 6ft 4in centre-back looked way off the pace ahead of the start of the season but has come a very long way since.
“If you saw him in Germany (in pre-season), I thought he was a country mile off, the way he was performing,” Lambert told ITV Sport in January.
“I had to give him a talking, to say he was going to have to go step it up. To be fair to the guy, he’s been exceptional (since).”
When asked by the East Anglian Daily Times whether Woolfenden was worth £10million, the Ipswich boss replied: “The way the modern game is? Absolutely, absolutely. Potentially what he could be, 100 per cent he is.”
Things are very exciting at Newcastle right now, with Mike Ashley on the verge of leaving the club and new owners coming in.
While some of the biggest names in world football have begun being linked with the Magpies, building a team involves bringing in players from different avenues, and talented EFL youngsters is just one of those.
Woolfenden has come a long way in a short space of time, which shows how quickly he is progressing and how good his attitude is, at 21 he still has loads of potential, and at 6ft 4in he’s an imposing figure – all traits which suggest he’s got what it takes to become a star.
