A manager has come out and said he offered his player ‘a fortune’ to stay but he ultimately joined Arsenal anyway.

Last summer, Arsenal spent over £200m on transfers, indicating their intent to finally win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004.

Arteta has just run Manchester City close the season prior and after their summer business, it felt they were ready to pip them.

In the end, they fell just short once more, but one man really impressed in his debut season and it has just come to light what his former manager did in a bid to convince him to stay.

David Moyes says West Ham offered Declan Rice a fortune to stay

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, former West Ham manager David Moyes revealed that the club offered Rice a fortune to stay before his record-breaking switch to Arsenal last summer.

Alan Shearer: “You would never stop someone going to the size of the club or Arsenal because of what he’d given you, but was there ever an opportunity that he was actually going to stay instead of…

Moyes: “No, behind the scenes, we had offered him a fortune to stay. Probably, we were putting it up all the time, two years before we started. Behind the scenes, we were trying to give him, but his mind was made up.”

Declan Rice now world class

Indeed, leaving West Ham must’ve been an incredibly tough decision for Rice but one that he felt he had to make for the benefit of his career.

Now at Arsenal, it seems he’s gone up a level and many would argue he has reached the illustrious world-class bracket under Mikel Arteta’s stewardship.

The 25-year-old will now be desperate to win silverware with The Gunners, just as he did under Moyes.
