Manchester United have nowhere near as much to offer targets as Arsenal do this summer.

The Gunners can provide UEFA Champions League football for prospective signings, whereas the Red Devils failed to qualify for any European competition last season, which also brings added financial strength to Arsenal in comparison to Manchester United.

Despite this, Manchester United now believe they have muscled Arsenal aside in the battle to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.

Dean Jones now states that those at Old Trafford feel they are in a better position than Arsenal to sign the Cameroon international.

Brentford value Mbeumo – who Alan Shearer called “outstanding” – at a fee of £50m as he enters the final 12 months of his contract, although the Bees do hold an option to extend that deal by a further year.

This contract situation, and the fact the Brentford No.19 is just 25 years of age, make him a highly attractive market opportunity, even more so after he scored 20 goals in 38 Premier League appearances last season.

Arsenal were advancing in talks to sign Mbeumo, although there has seemingly been a shift in the pecking order, as Jones now claims Manchester United feel they are in pole position.

Despite being a talismanic figure, Thomas Frank has already said Mbeumo can leave Brentford this summer for the right price, admitting that the Bees are ultimately a “selling club” in the grand scheme of things.

The Dane told Sky Sports: “I’ve said many times, we are a selling club, but at the same time we have to reinforce that there are ten clubs in the world who aren’t selling clubs.

“So, of course, if the right price – and that’s going to be expensive – is coming, then I’m sure the club will be open for it, but I’m very happy he’s here, and I’m convinced that Bryan will still be happy playing football here (if he stays).”

Manchester United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and if Jones is to be trusted, Mbeumo could soon follow the Brazilian to Old Trafford.
