Manchester United endured a nightmare in Grimsby as Ruben Amorim saw his side crash out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.
The Red Devils were only involved in this early stage of the Carabao Cup having failed to qualify for any European competition for the first time since the 2013/14 campaign, after finishing 15th in the Premier League last season.
It was the League Two outfit who looked like the Premier League side, as goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren put Grimsby 2-0 up before the interval.
They were even unfortunate not to go 3-0 up after Cameron Gardner harshly saw a strike disallowed for offside, before goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire helped Manchester United take the tie to penalties.
Grimsby – however – still emerged victorious.
Even the £74m man Benjamin Sesko – who was making his first start for Manchester United – could not find the net, although fans have defended the Slovenian and instead pointed the finger at Diogo Dalot.
Manchester United supporters feel Diogo Dalot did Benjamin Sesko no favours at Blundell Park
Rival fans might mock the Manchester United No.30 for failing to make an impact against Grimsby, but you have to feel for him after another game without much service.
Rio Ferdinand noticed Sesko also struggled to receive much of the ball from his teammates during the 1-1 at Fulham, and the theme continued on Wednesday night as Dalot came under fire.
One Manchester United fan first questioned an odd run the Portugal international made off the Slovenia international, posting: “High ball going into Sesko and Dalot runs under him?? Our players’ football knowledge is shocking.”
Another added: “Dalot has ignored Sesko like 100 times.”
A third Manchester United fan begged the 26-year-old to cross the ball into Sesko.
They wrote: “Dalot, cross the ball please! You can’t be wasting Sesko runs, that’s not smart.”
The Manchester United No.2 delivered three successful crosses against Grimsby – meaning they reached a teammate, according to Sofascore – but they were all lacking in quality.
Another asked: “Does Dalot know Sesko is 6ft 5in?”
Judging by the lack of deliveries, Amorim needs to get these two working together on the training pitch, if the Portuguese tactician is to persist with using Dalot.
Diogo Dalot has made little progress since Jamie Carragher criticism
Several months ago – back in December 2024 to be precise – Jamie Carragher said Dalot cannot play at wing-back and described it as a “massive problem” for Amorim.
Before a 2-0 defeat for Manchester United against Newcastle at Old Trafford, the Sky Sports pundit said: “It’s a massive problem… When there’s a turnover, look at (Lisandro) Martinez, he’s actually telling Dalot you’ve got to get ahead of this (his marker) you’re a wing back now, you’re not a full-back.
“Martinez is having to tell him to get forward and he’s just walking, that’s the difference, they (Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui) don’t think like attacking full-backs.”
Dalot has evidently made little progress when it comes to improving this part of his game having struggled against a League Two side in Grimsby, although Amorim also has to shoulder some of the responsibility for an apparent lack of effective coaching.
