Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard would have especially been disappointed after witnessing his side crash out of the Carabao Cup by losing 2-0 to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
After Newcastle beat Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of the semi-final, the Norwegian had the near-impossible task of inspiring his side to stage a comeback in the second.
But Martin Odegaard would have had hope that heading into the contest, they could crush Eddie Howe’s dreams — considering their recent 5-1 walloping of Manchester City gave Mikel Arteta’s side the perfect confidence boost heading into one of Arsenal’s most important games of the season.
But unlike Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon, who were clinical in front of goal, Odegaard missed an absolute sitter to give the visitors a much-needed lead by hitting the post from close quarters.

In the aftermath of the contest, a debate seems to have kicked off between the former Real Madrid playmaker and Bruno Fernandes.
Manchester United fans, in particular have claimed on X that Fernandes is a superior player to Odegaard after the latter failed to lead Arsenal to a victory against Newcastle.

Man United fans claim Bruno Fernandes is better than Martin Odegaard after Newcastle vs Arsenal
One fan simply wrote: “Odegaard could never lace Bruno Fernandes’ boots.”
Another United fan emphasised that Fernandes is in a different league to Odegaard, who William Saliba raved about writing: “Odegaard vs Bruno gimmick happened only because our fans kept inviting disrespect on the latter. The two aren’t even in the same stratosphere.”
A Manchester United supporter claimed he prefers how Fernandes takes far more risks than Odegaard after watching the latter’s display against Newcastle, saying: “Watching Odegaard made me appreciate Bruno Fernandes more. Odegaard is not fit for purpose, tidy and touch-heavy player. That’s about it.”
Fernandes, labelled an “amazing captain” by Rasmus Hojlund is a Premier League legend in the making, one Manchester United fan mentioned, which is why he considers the comparisons to Odegaard as blasphemous: “I actually think its criminal to compare Bruno to Odegaard its borderline disrespectful Bruno is on course to be a Premier League all- time great.”
A fifth Red Devils fan claimed: “Never want to see people tell me Odegaard is better than Bruno Fernandes by the way. The stats show he’s better and he also never gets injured.”
A sixth Manchester United chimed in as well: “I genuinely think if you’re not a troll or a hater and you’re a proper football fan who has watched football for some time now, you’ll actually find this comparison extremely disrespectful towards Bruno. Odegaard hasn’t even helped his team lift a piece of silverware.”
Rio Ferdinand explained where Bruno Fernandes is better than Martin Odegaard
Rio Ferdinand claimed Fernandes is better than Odegaard in terms of being a superior creator and match-winner.
Ferdinand explained: “If I was playing behind them and the way I was and I’m not blowing my own trumpet here but the way I would be with them, I wouldn’t accept Bruno [Fernandes] being frivolous with the ball and just playing mad, outlandish balls.”
“I’ll be on him all the time. And if I was exerting pressure and my team and my dressing room’s pressure on players, I probably would want Bruno in my team because I know he’s going to get me a goal or an assist or he’s going to create something more often than [Martin] Odegaard.”
“Odegaard makes Arsenal tick better, Bruno creates the openings and goals and assists and chances and unlocks better. If you combine the both, you’ve got the man.”
A statistical comparison between the pair shows Fernandes has the edge over Odegaard this season.
| IN ALL COMPETITIONS | STARTS | GOALS | ASSISTS |
| MARTIN ODEGAARD | 22 | 3 | 6 |
| BRUNO FERNANDES | 33 | 9 | 11 |
However, the Portuguese international has made 11 more starts in comparison due to Odegaard’s injury earlier this season and ultimately, it seems like the battle between the two attacking midfielders will continue to rage on for years.
