Manchester United had a tough afternoon at the Etihad Stadium, but the performance of Benjamin Sesko will have left them with some hope.

The 22-year-old was handed his first Premier League start by Amorim following his £73 million move from RB Leipzig over the summer.

The Red Devils were beaten 3-0 in the Manchester Derby with Erling Haaland scoring a brace and Phil Foden having opened the scoring.

But United’s supporters have been making the same point about Sesko following his decent showing against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Man United fans hail Benjamin Sesko’s hold-up and movement

Manchester United fans were left impressed with Benjamin Sesko’s hold-up and movement during their defeat in the Manchester derby.

It was a tough afternoon for Ruben Amorim’s side, but the Red Devils will at least come away with the positives of Sesko’s promising display.

The Slovenian was left rather isolated up front, but he did well, making some dangerous runs in behind and also looking to link up with United’s other attackers.

It was clear that United were missing Matheus Cunha as Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo struggled to find the runs of their number 30.

Sesko, whom Amorim was urged to start, showed positive signs on what was otherwise a rather bleak day for the 13-time Premier League champions.

During the game, United fans took to X to share their appreciation for the striker’s display in the derby, despite their side losing.

One fan said: “Sesko has done a lot of good things. His movement is good, and his ability to hold up and distribute the ball is good as well. And that’s all I ask for from a striker when he’s not scoring.”

“Sesko is a clear upgrade over Hojlund. Hold up, play is so much better,” claimed another.

There was yet more praise for the forward: “Sesko’s runs and hold-up play have been very good; we’re just not creating for him.”

Finally, another claimed: “Think Sesko had a much more positive half, too. Had some nice ideas when the ball came to his feet and made a good run in behind at the end.”

Man United fans will now be hoping that Amorim gives him another chance to start next week when they host Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The striker is still young and has plenty of time to develop, but on his first start, he showed encouraging signs for United.

Benjamin Sesko is still learning Ruben Amorim’s system

Izzy Christensen believes that Sesko is still learning Amorim’s system and playing with his new teammates, like Diallo and Mbeumo.

The former Man City women’s player was encouraged by the signs the striker showed against City, especially his ‘runs in behind’ the defence.

Christensen told Sky Sports: “It’s been tight, it’s been tight for him to get involved; he’s had a couple of gaps where he can run in behind and show what he can do.

“It’s almost like he’s still learning his way in this system, playing with Mbeumo and Diallo.”
