Manchester United went four Premier League games unbeaten for the first time since March as they drew 2-2 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday – but it was an incident away from the City Ground that has seen them dodge a real transfer bullet.
Casemiro put Manchester United in front at the City Ground in a real show of character from the Red Devils to get what would have been their fourth straight win in the Premier League.
However, it’s a feat they haven’t achieved since February 2024, and that run was set to continue with Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolo Savona turned the game around for Nottingham Forest in two whirlwind minutes.
Amad Diallo scored a late equaliser, and United will see it as two points dropped, though they are up to seventh. However, it’s an incident elsewhere in the Premier League that will see Ruben Amorim dodge a transfer bullet with Emi Martinez having a nightmare against Liverpool.

Emi Martinez mistake cost Aston Villa vs Liverpool and Manchester United will be looking on in relief
Aston Villa travelled to Liverpool in the Premier League’s 8pm kick-off, hoping to continue the Reds’ poor run of form by handing them a fifth straight defeat in the competition.
But any hopes of that were punished in first-half stoppage time when Mohamed Salah capitalised on Emi Martinez’s lax pass.
Aiming to find Pau Torres, his pass was wayward and straight into the feet of Salah, who finished with ease to give Villa a mountain to climb.
It was that mistake that set the tone for the game and with Villa then always chasing an equaliser, it allowed Ryan Gravenberch to double Liverpool’s lead.
It was a costly error from Martinez, who was under little pressure to give the ball away in all reality.
It’s also not the first time he’s made silly mistakes, and with Manchester United keen on signing Emi Martinez in the summer, it’s a deal that Ruben Amorim will be thankful he didn’t opt for.

Signing Senne Lammens might be Manchester United’s best business in a long time
Instead, United ended up signing Senne Lammens and he’s impressed since his move to Manchester United.
The Red Devils have evidently signed badly in the goalkeeping department in recent years, with Andre Onana being an underwhelming signing overall.
Littered with errors, Onana made way for his backup Altay Bayindir, but the Turkish star wasn’t much better than Onana and that forced United into signing a new goalkeeper.
| Player | Man Utd appearances | Man Utd clean sheets |
|---|---|---|
| Senne Lammens | 4 | 1 |
| Altay Bayindir | 17 | 3 |
| Andre Onana | 102 | 24 |
Lammens arrived as a relative unknown but he’s done well so far in his Old Trafford career and at the age of just 23, he could be around for the next decade.
Martinez, meanwhile, has recently turned 33 and despite his honours for Argentina and Aston Villa, even that experience won’t carry on for much longer.
Whether he will decline is another question but producing awful errors such as the one against Liverpool makes it seem like a brilliant decision to avoid landing the former Arsenal star.
