Manchester City are reportedly willing to let striker Lukas Nmecha leave for just £7million this summer despite his stunning form for Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht this season – and Celtic have got to be at the front of the potentially busy queue.
Nmecha, 22, has been sensational for Anderlecht this season. Clocking up 33 appearances for the Belgian club during the 2020-21 season, the 17-time Germany Under-21 international has scored a very impressive 16 goals – as well as creating two.
Whether Anderlecht consider a permanent move remains to be seen, while German side Hamburg are said to be interested. Hamburg are closing in on promotion from the second tier of German football, and 24Hamburg.de say they want to sign him.
They want him to forefront their push to survive relegation from the top tier next season. But surely, given his form and bargain price tag, Hamburg are not going to be the only club interested – and Celtic should be one of those keen on signing Nmecha.
Last summer, The Mail claimed Celtic were eyeing a move for Nmecha on loan – but with Odsonne Edouard expected to leave the club this summer and doubts over the quality and future of Patryk Klimala, Albian Ajeti and Leigh Griffiths.
A striker is needed and Nmecha would be perfect, especially given his age and price. Combine that with City’s strong connection with Manchester City – thanks to deals for the likes of Oliver Ntcham, Jeremie Frimpong and more – it makes sense.
If Celtic are to spend big on a powerful, technially-gifted striker to fire them back into contention with Rangers – spending £7million on Nmecha makes sense. A no-brainer for Celtic’s next manager, potentially in the form of Eddie Howe.
