Tottenham proved on Sunday once again that they are in desperate need for a defender, as Davinson Sanchez was at fault – not for the first time this season – for one of Newcastle’s goals. Man City might just have provided them with the ideal answer.
Toby Alderweireld has been in and out of the side, while Eric Dier’s rejuvenated form earlier in the season has fallen away. The England man is now some way down the pecking order, with Sanchez and Joe Rodon combining for two successive matches.
Summer signing Rodon, a Wales international, has impressed in the last two games as well as shining during the international break for his country. But Sanchez has come under plenty of criticism, and he made another mistake on Sunday.
His abysmal clearance was followed up by a lacklustre attempt to get back into position as Sean Longstaff found Joelinton to score. If Dier and Alderweireld are below Sanchez, then Tottenham simply need a new defender in the summer window.
Transfer website CalcioMercato claim that Manchester City are ready to ‘listen to offers’ for France international Aymeric Laporte – a player they bought for £57million (BBC) in January 2018. City are hardly going to sell to their title rivals.
So that rules out the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and probably Chelsea. The chances are that Laporte could join a Spanish side, potentially PSG or even Bayern Munich – but maybe remaining in the Premier League could also be an option.
Indeed, if he is to remain in the Premier League – Tottenham would love to sign him. Not only would it give Spurs a left-footed centre-back and finally replace Jan Vertonghen, but it would also finally end their search for a top-quality centre-back.
Laporte and Rodon has everything a centre-back partnership in the Premier League requires – right and left-footed, Rodon is a battler who is excellent in the air, while Laporte is brilliant on the ball. If City are willing, Spurs must go in for Laporte.
