Man City ready to rival Chelsea and Carlo Ancelotti for £34m Manuel Locatelli transfer
According to TuttoMercatoWEB, Man City are ready to rival Chelsea for the summer transfer of Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli.
The Champions League finalists are set to go head-to-head for the Italian’s signature amid widespread European interest. Juventus have marked Locatelli as one of two options who can dictate Massimiliano Allegri’s engine room next season.
Juventus admire Locatelli’s ability to protect the backline and orchestrate play out from the centre. The other option is a return for Barcelona’s Miralem Pjanic, just a year after leaving Turin for Catalunya.
Paris Saint-Germain are also admirers of Locatelli’s ability, while Real Madrid may pursue a deal following Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival. But Chelsea and Man City are ready to lodge offers for a player expected to lead Italy at Euro 2020.
Locatelli is a man on the rise after impressing for Sassuolo in the Serie A last season. His potential has sky-high limits, which the Neroverdi are reluctant to see leave Emilia-Romagna.
Yet Goal report a €40million (£34m) asking price would be enough to secure a transfer. Sassuolo would also accept payment spread over multiple seasons as a result of the pandemic. While Locatelli told Corriere Dello Sport: “Playing abroad is an option for me.”
That option could be at the Etihad Stadium after The Telegraph claimed Pep Guardiola viewed Locatelli as Fernandinho’s long-term successor. The Man City boss is eager to secure his midfield anchor regardless of the Brazilian’s immediate future.
TBR’s view: Locatelli ideal for Man City
Guardiola surprised many by leaving both Fernandinho and Rodri on the bench for the Champions League final. His decision left Man City without a holding midfielder on the pitch and Chelsea were able to capitalise on it.
But the Spaniard would not make the same mistake again with Locatelli on the books at Man City. The Sassuolo maestro is ideal for the Citizens and would effortlessly slot into the holding role Fernandinho has long occupied.
Man City may have bid for Locatelli soon, though, as a strong Euro 2020 will only work in Sassuolo’s favour. The Italian already has a raft of suitors and will lead his country at the tournament. And suitors would surely flock for the Neroverdi’s favourable terms if he does.
