Report: What Guardiola sees in Kalvin Phillips that pushed Manchester City to pay £45m to Leeds
Manchester City are set to complete the signing of Leeds midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, after a deal was struck over a fee between the two clubs.
Reports from The Athletic yesterday confirmed an agreement had been reached between Leeds and City for the transfer of Phillips. It’s claimed Leeds will receive around £45m for Phillips, who had also been a target for Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp.
And according to a report from 90Min, Pep Guardiola and City insiders feel they’ve got the right man in Phillips. 90Min reports how City feel the England man will be a good fit in their dressing room, with a strong belief that Phillips has the ‘perfect’ character to fit in for the title-winners.
Phillips’ agreement with City will give Leeds some breathing room when it comes to keeping hold of Raphinha. The Brazilian winger could still leave this summer, but the Whites are in no rush to sell with funds in the bank from the Phillips deal.
The midfielder will leave Elland Road as a firm favourite among the Leeds fanbase. Phillips is said to have flatly refused the idea of signing for Manchester United as well, something which will go down well with the Leeds fans.
TBR’s View: Kalvin Phillips Can Shine At Manchester City
He’ll need to be patient and accept he won’t be playing every single week, but Kalvin Phillips can take his game to the next level at City. With Guardiola as his manager, he’ll only improve further which can be a good thing for both the player and England.
Guardiola is overseeing a change in personnel at City right now. He’s already got Jack Grealish on board and now Phillips has been picked up as well. It’s akin to what Sir Alex did at United at times, ensuring the wheels keep turning and nothing goes stagnant.
For Phillips, it’s an exciting time and one he’s sure to relish and thrive in.
