Malo Gusto’s Bayern nightmare proves 96% pass master must start for Chelsea – it’s not Reece James

Chelsea kick-started their Champions League campaign with a brutal 3-1 defeat against Bayern Munich, and the game proved that one underrated member of the squad deserves more game time.

It was a tough reintroduction to Europe’s elite competition as the Blues were comfortably defeated by Vincent Kompany’s side, despite Cole Palmer’s goal.

Chelsea’s Malo Gusto struggled throughout the game and gave the ball away for Bayern Munich’s third goal, which put the match beyond Enzo Maresca’s side.

Chelsea fans were frustrated that Maresca didn’t replace Gusto in the second half, with Reece James being hooked instead.

However, while Maresca should look to change up his starting lineup this weekend, James does not necessarily need to start ahead of Gusto, as another player impressed.

Chelsea need to start Andrey Santos against Manchester United

Gusto might have picked up an assist in the first half, but his overall performance left much to be desired, so Chelsea might switch him out for the trip to Old Trafford on Saturday.

James can slot back into the right-back position against Manchester United, which would free up a space in midfield for Andrey Santos.

The young Brazilian came on in the 68th minute and was instantly impressed with his calmness and assured ability on the ball, creating an offensive and defensive impact.

Santos almost picked up a brilliant assist when he played in Palmer, who found the back of the net, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside.

Despite that, Santos’ performance proved that he’s more than ready to step up and begin starting games for Chelsea to provide competition for Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea have long-term plans for Andrey Santos

Chelsea fans have been excited to see Santos play at Stamford Bridge for some time, expecting him to become a regular in the team following his successful loan at Strasbourg.

French media were blown away by Santos last season, which led to Maresca keeping him at the club this season to provide further competition in midfield.

TBR Football previously revealed that Chelsea have no plans to sell Santos, and he has been factored into the team for this season.

The Brazilian has featured in three of Chelsea’s four Premier League games this season, but he is yet to start a match.
