Tottenham Hotspur are looking likely to have a fairly quiet January transfer window. After a summer where nobody arrived, it seems unlikely that Spurs will be bringing in many new faces this winter. The more likely scenario is that some players could be moved on.
However, last January had a similar feel. Then, a deal that Mauricio Pochettino could not pass up simply fell into his lap. Paris Saint-Germain decided they wanted to move on Lucas Moura.
Tottenham obliged. The Brazilian arrived on a reported £25 million deal and has gone on to establish himself as an important player for Tottenham Hotspur.
So, one year down the line, could they repeat the trick for another Brazilian winger?
It seems Barcelona are in a similar position to the one PSG found themselves in a year ago. On this occasion, it is Malcom that they want to get rid of.
Barca are currently full in regards to their foreign player quota and would, therefore, like to get Malcom off the books. Spurs are also full, but with Mousa Dembele set to leave, that will not be an issue for long.
He was left out of the Barcelona squad to face Eibar today after a poor showing in the Copa del Rey against Levante in midweek. He only arrived at the Nou Camp from Bordeaux in the summer and has been a target for Tottenham before.
For the past 12 months, Spurs have been linked with the player. In October, Sport claimed Spurs were monitoring his situation, with an apparent £44 million move on the horizon.
Now Tottenham are certainly not going to pay that sort of money for, effectively, a Barcelona flop. However, if he is available Tottenham could undoubtedly try and do another Moura and bring him in late.
Even a loan deal does not seem beyond the realms of possibilities. If the window is drawing to a close, and Barcelona decide to shift him, you can bet Tottenham will be considering a move for their long-term target.
Just like with Moura, this opportunity might just fall in their lap.
