‘Makes me puke’: Some Palace fans react to news out of Spurs camp

Some Crystal Palace fans have been giving their thoughts on the news that Spurs have landed Nuno Espirito Santo.

On Wednesday, Tottenham announced that the 47-year-old had penned a two-year contract to become their new manager.

Palace reportedly spoke to Nuno weeks ago but ended up pulling the plug.

Both Tottenham and the Eagles have been looking for a new manager for a while, and it’s not been smooth sailing for either club.

Spurs sacked Jose Mourinho in April, while Roy Hodgson left Palace at the end of the 2020-21 season.

Both clubs reportedly spoke to a number of managers but, while Tottenham now have Nuno, Palace are still looking.

And some Eagles fans aren’t pleased with seeing a manager they reportedly came close to appointing now with another club.

What reportedly happened between Palace and Nuno

In June, The Athletic provided a detailed account as to what reportedly happened in talks between Nuno and Palace.

At the time, the Eagles were seemingly close to landing the former Wolves boss, but Everton were also being linked with him.

Firstly, Nuno apparently wanted to bring along a significant entourage of coaches and other backroom staff.

This would have increased the overall package cost, threatened current staff’s roles, and they’d have probably left with Nuno if things didn’t work out.

The Athletic then claims that agent Jorge Mendes began to put forward a drip-feed of unanticipated demands, caveats and “cake-and-eat-it clauses”.

These apparently covered several aspects, such as financial, contractual, logistical or recruitment and staffing.

The Athletic went on to claim that, while it’s unclear how keen Everton were on recruiting Nuno, talks apparently took place.

There was clearly a level of interest in Nuno’s camp over the prospect of working at Everton, added the outlet.

And with the seed of doubt sown in Nuno’s head, he apparently became elusive as the landscape constantly shifted amid new demands.

And eventually, Palace pulled the plug.
