Watford reportedly want Arsenal player Stuart Pearce once claimed was 'integral' to the club's future success.

Watford are lining up a transfer for Arsenal defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles, according to The Mirror.

The ace spent the second-half of last season on-loan with West Brom, where he endured relegation.

However, he is now in the middle of a tug of war over his services.

The publication is claiming that the Hornets have joined Southampton in the race to sign the player.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men wanted to sign the star back in January, however, he opted to join the Baggies.

TBR View: Maitland-Niles sale a must for Arsenal amidst raft of transfer links

The last week or so has seen the Gunners get linked with a raft of different players.

It seems as though the club have big aspirations for this summer’s window.

There have been plenty of news flying about regarding transfers, including links with Ben White and James Maddison.

The English duo alone will cost a reported £110m, £50m for White and £60m for Maddison.

But after a year where finances have taken a hit, there need to be sales to offset incomings.

And Maitland-Niles proves one of the most perfect options to sell this summer.

Everything about the player makes him a priceless asset that could fetch millions. His age, versatility, his ability and the fact he’s an England international makes him a key player on the transfer list.

However, that’s where it proves such a shame for Mikel Arteta.

Maitland-Niles is incredibly talented and could even be Arsenal’s starting right-back. But, his poor mentality is holding him up despite his obvious talent.

With squad development a necessity this summer, there needs to be sales.

The 23-year-old is the perfect asset that can raise millions of pounds to fund what could well be a busy summer for Arsenal.
