Crystal Palace earned their first win of the new Premier League season with a dramatic 2-1 triumph over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The Eagles took the lead via a neat Jordan Ayew finish and then held onto their slender advantage, as Marcus Rashford missed a penalty, until Daniel James levelled the tie in the 89th minute. However, there was yet more late drama to come as Patrick Van Aanholt took advantage of some sloppy defending to fire the visitors to victory with practically the last kick of the game.
The result will give the south London club a huge confidence boost. Roy Hodgson’s side took their few chances, but also deserve credit for defending stoutly. Their back line was expertly marshalled by Gary Cahill.
The veteran centre-back was making his Crystal Palace debut, having arrived at Selhurst Park from Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer.

He barely played for the Blues last season, but showed that he still has plenty left to offer in the top flight. Aside from a poor early challenge, which could have resulted in a sending off, the Englishman was solid. The 33-year-old’s experience and authority came to the fore and the Eagles battled for a result.
After the match, plenty of Crystal Palace fans took to Twitter to applaud Cahill’s display.
As a palace fan for over 40 years you picked a damn fine game to debut on Gary, well done mate and welcome to the #cpfc family.
