A number of Arsenal fans have been commenting on Twitter following their shock Europa League elimination as Nicolas Pepe was one of the few Gunners players emerging with some credit.
Mikel Arteta’s charges took a slender 1-0 lead into the last-32 second leg at the Emirates Stadium as Olympiakos came to town.
Arsenal were taken to extra time by Pape Abou Cisse’s goal early in the second half, which levelled the tie.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s overhead kick in the 113th minute seemed to have done enough to get the Gunners into the next round.
As extra time entered its latter stages, however, Arsenal conceded again, this time through the unmarked Youssef El Arabi’s effort.
To add insult to injury, Aubameyang – the player who had scored for the Gunners and has effectively carried them for much of the season – spurned a gilt-edged opportunity to score late on.
Though it was a disappointing night for Arsenal, there was at least solace for some fans in Pepe’s display, which bodes well for the future as the Gunners continue their rebuilding job under Arteta.
The Ivory Coast international took four shots, one of which on target, played one key pass, had a pass accuracy of close to 80 percent, took 113 touches, attempted 12 dribbles, made one tackle, and put in nine crosses (WhoScored).
Here is what some Gunners fans said about Pepe’s display:
Arsenal should just pass the ball to Pepe.

We’ve been very poor tonight, but Pepe and Xhaka have been absolutely superb. Again. #afc
