'Magnificent', 'actually made my day': Some Rangers fans blown away by 'brilliant' news from Ibrox
Glasgow Rangers fans have been revelling in the news that Jermain Defoe will continue his Ibrox adventure.
Defoe joined the Gers in 2019, first on loan before signing permanently the following year.
He has become a fan favourite at Ibrox thanks to his class and hard work on and off the pitch.
Defoe’s previous contract expired at the end of the 2020-21 season.
He faced a decision on whether or not to continue playing after claiming his first winners’ medal at the age of 38 with Gers’ Premiership title triumph.
However, Defoe won’t be hanging up his boots just yet as he moves into a player-coach role at Ibrox.
“It is well-documented how much I love the club and the relationship I have with the fans, the players and the staff at the club,” he told the Gers website.
“So to get the deal over the line, I am just delighted.”
Rangers fans are just as delighted, taking to Twitter to rejoice:
Defoe has scored 32 goals in 72 appearances for Rangers.
This includes four goals in their unbeaten Scottish Premiership title-winning season.
“I am just delighted”
“It is well-documented how much I love the club and the relationship I have with the fans, the players and the staff at the club,” Defoe told the Gers website.
“So to get the deal over the line, I am just delighted.
“It is something I wanted to happen, even before the season finished, especially the way we finished the season with winning the league.
“The perfect time to be at the football club and it was so special, so to sign another contract as a player/coach, and to still be a part of it, it is an amazing feeling for me and my family.
“It is something different and it is something new for me, and first of all, I want to thank the board, Ross [Wilson] and the manager and all the staff that have made this happen.
Rangers and Defoe are a great match – TBR View
Defoe is a top player who offers so much to Rangers both on and off the pitch, so this is definitely great news for the Ibrox camp.
Rangers’ long-awaited 55th title will hopefully only be the beginning of a return to the glory years.
And a player like Defoe would be crucial in the dressing room to help this come to fruition.
