Emile Smith Rowe and Nuno Tavares combined to get Bukayo Saka in down the left, and he rifled past Martin Dubravka.

Mikel Arteta’s charges then doubled their advantage through Gabriel Martinelli in the 65th minute.

Tomiyasu delivered a sumptuous cross to completely unlock the Newcastle defence, which Martinelli side-footed home on the volley.

As well as his assist, Tomiyasu shone defensively, making several tackles and interceptions to keep the visitors at bay.

He also weighed in with three efforts, made two key passes, completed two dribbles, whipped in five crosses and played four accurate long balls.
