'Madness': Lee Hendrie reacts to transfer news coming out of Aston Villa

Promising English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has agreed to join Chelsea from Aston Villa.

The Villa academy graduate’s contract had just one year left to run and he has decided to resolve that issue by joining Thomas Tuchel’s men.

Lee Hendrie knows what it is like to come through the ranks at Villa as a young midfielder and make the grade at Villa Park.

He has taken to Twitter to react to the news coming out of the club and does not understand the teenager’s decision.

Hendrie’s concerns relate to Chelsea’s use of their academy players to generate cash for first team signings through a series of loans and then being sold.

The likes of Tammy Abraham and Tariq Lamptey are just some of the talented young Englishmen who have had to leave Stamford Bridge in search of regular gametime.

Chelsea have an elite academy but very few of them go on to make the grade at Stamford Bridge for the senior team.

Of course, there has been a change of ownership at Chelsea in the not too distant past and that may mean a change of approach with regards youth development.

But as it stands, it is still a risk for a young player to go to Chelsea, where they are just as likely to embark on a series of loan exits as anything else.

There are other clubs around where Chukwuemeka could have played more regular football and established himself as a Premier League midfielder.

It remains to be seen how the switch turns out for the Englishman, but it is easy to see Hendrie’s point of view.
