Gary Neville was left shocked by Manchester United’s attempts to play out from the back at Liverpool today.
Man United headed into today’s game as massive underdogs following a difficult run of form under Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman doesn’t exactly boast a brilliant record away from home against the top sides either, with United suffering a 7-0 defeat at Anfield last season.
Yet, the Red Devils came out and attempted to play out from the back today as Ten Hag aimed to utilise Andre Onana’s ability with the ball at his feet.

But United’s brave approach led to Liverpool winning the ball back in dangerous areas of the pitch on a few occasions in the first half.
And it’s fair to say that Gary Neville couldn’t understand why United stuck with their approach.
Neville stunned by Onana’s attempts to play out against Liverpool
Neville was covering the game Sky Sports and raised concerns over United playing out from the back through Onana.
It came shortly after the £47 million goalkeeper played the ball to Kobbie Mainoo, who was then dispossessed by Luis Diaz.
The moment led to a chance for the Colombian as he almost got on the end of Darwin Nunez’s headed effort. And Neville labelled United’s approach to the game as ‘madness’ while commentating on Sky.
“That all stems from Manchester United trying to play out from the back with Onana on these goal-kicks, which is madness,” he said.
“They’re just asking to be pressed. It’s Mainoo who gets pressed on that far side and they work it over.”

It’s fair to say that United were second-best in the first half but Liverpool were sloppy in the final third.
Ten Hag’s side gave the ball away in some dangerous areas as they continued to try and play out from the back.
Nevertheless, Liverpool failed to fashion a guilt-edge opportunity and the Dutchman would have been content with the scoreline heading into halftime.
Ten Hag’s men continued to frustrate Liverpool in the second half and limited them to efforts from range.
Trent Alexander-Arnold hit the post with a brilliant effort from outside the box but Rasmus Hojlund had an opportunity just moments later.
Diogo Dalot was given his marching orders in the final moments of the game after picking up a second booking for dissent. But United were rewarded with a point for a resilient defesnive display.
