Madger Gomes speaks out on failed Leeds spell

Madger Gomes has told Spanish newspaper Marca that his time at Elland Road came to an end largely because of injuries, with the former Leeds United man currently looking to help Doncaster promoted to the Championship.

The 22-year-old was a somewhat surprising signing when he joined Leeds on a free transfer from Premier League giants Liverpool in the summer of 2017. He managed just two senior appearances with the Yorkshire outfit, and left a season later.

He moved to Spain with Alaves’ reserve side, before going on loan to French outfit Sochaux and then to Croatia with NK Istra. But the Spain youth international struggled to settle, and he has since returned to Yorkshire with Doncaster.

Gomes has made eight appearances for the League One side, and The Dons currently sit in seventh place. Asked about his Leeds spell, Gomes revealed how he signed for the Whites – and indeed why he failed to have an impact.

“When Victor Orta called me, I was very excited. Leeds are a very big club, Elland Road is a very nice stadium, always with 30 thousand people. Leeds deserves to be in the Premier League. But I did not have much continuity, also because of injuries,” Gomes said.

TBR’s view – Orta has learned from his mistakes in recent years

Gomes was one of a number of questionable signings made by Orta in the summer of 2017. Indeed, Laurens De Bock, Hadi Sacko, Pawel Cibicki, Felix Wiedwald, Yosuke Ideguchi, Ouasim Bouy and Vurnon Anita all joined that term.

All of those players failed to impress at Leeds, as did Gomes. But, Orta has since learned. Of the six signings made in the summer, four have impressed – including Eddie Nketiah, Ben White, Helder Costa and Jack Harrison.

Jack Clarke is well known to Leeds and it was good business to bring in so much money for him. Illan Meslier was a necessity.
