Newcastle United were linked with numerous players in the January transfer window, including Lyon star Martin Terrier.
L’Equipe reported that Newcastle enquired about Terrier during the January window but Lyon told the Premier League side that he was not for sale.
A half-season loan was then discussed but Lyon decided to keep their talented young midfield man for their Ligue 1 campaign.
And in yesterday’s league clash with Montpellier, Terrier showed exactly why Newcastle were interested in him.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder operated on the left flank (he can also play through the middle) and scored the opener in Lyon’s 3-2 victory.

It was Terrier’s sixth goal of the season in 32 matches, showing that he is a midfielder who knows where the net is.
Newcastle have held an interest in the France under-21 starlet before and they may have had scouts running the rule over him in action at the weekend.
If so, then they would have been impressed by the ex-Lille winger, who is stirring up excitement at Lyon this season.
Terrier is a promising talent for the future and he could become a key player for the Magpies in future years if he fulfils his potential and Rafa Benitez decides to take a punt on him.
