Ipswich Town defeated Tranmere Rovers in League One yesterday to maintain their strong start to the season. The Tractor Boys are now top of the league and looking like strong candidates to return to the Championship at the first attempt.
One of the stars of their good form has been left wing-back, Luke Garbutt. That form continued at the weekend, as he scored a stunning free-kick in Ipswich’s win against the Merseyside club.
Of course, Garbutt is on loan at Portman Road from another Merseyside team. Everton allowed Garbutt to join Paul Lambert’s side for the 2019-20 season following a loan spell at Oxford United last season.
He now has three goals in four games this season, which was briefly disrupted by a knee injury.
Garbutt was once considered the long-term successor to Leighton Baines at Goodison Park. Signed from Leeds United in 2009 he went on to impress in the Everton first-team in his initial breakthrough.

Unfortunately, his career stalled with loan spells at Fulham and Wigan, and Everton have moved on without him.
Roberto Martinez was a huge fan, handing him a five-year extension back in 2015 but Garbutt has been ignored by Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and Marco Silva since.
This period of form will undoubtedly be a big boost for Garbutt but his chances of an Everton reprieve are surely over.
At 26-years-old, his next move should be a permanent one and it seems as though Ipswich looks like an initial good fit.
Everton fans will no doubt wish him well as, under Martinez, it looked as though the left-back was set to be a major figure in Everton’s future. Hopefully, he can keep up his form and fitness and prosper away from Goodison Park in the near future.
