The Elland Road atmosphere might have actually done more harm than good last night as Leeds succumbed to a heavy loss against Aston Villa.
Despite the noise being deafening at times for the home debut of Jesse Marsch, the Leeds players never actually found their mojo against Villa and were seen off comfortably in the end. Indeed, Marsch himself even referenced the atmosphere after the game, hinting it could have affected his players more than it should have.

However, according to observations from Leeds Live, if that is the case, then the Whites players can only have themselves to blame, and in particular, Luke Ayling.
Leeds Live reports how Ayling was seen giving it large to the Leeds fans before the second period got underway. In fairness to the Leeds star, the crowd did respond and it ensured a raucous atmosphere greeted the Villa players as they eventually made their way out.
But if Marsch is worried about his players buckling under the atmosphere, then this might not be the best idea.
TBR’s View: Marsch Already Treading A Thin Line With Such Comments
This was a strange observation from Marsch and one which might not go down well with the Leeds players in all honesty. Leeds, like many Yorkshire clubs, thrive off their relationship with the home support and Luke Ayling was simply trying to drum up more support.
For Marsch to question his players’ mentality in front of such a hostile crowd seems strange, especially when it’s something that has worked so well for so long. If he’s not a fan of it or thinks it has a negative impact on his players, then he’s going to find things hard.
Leeds face an uphill struggle now. And if the players, fans, and coach aren’t all pulling the same way, that struggle will only intensify.
