Luke Ayling says Leeds 25-year-old teammate has “got everything”
Leeds United defender Luke Ayling has claimed that teammate Kalvin Phillips has got a bit of everything in his game.
Phillips, who earns £35,000-a-week (Mirror), has received a glowing verdict by his teammate.
The 25-year-old central midfielder is a Leeds-born talent who’s followed the path of so many players at Elland Road, which has been developing in the Championship before becoming a Premier League star this season.
He’s a deep-lying playmaker with a deft touch and such control in possession, which is why a lot of Marcelo Bielsa’s system revolves around him in the centre of the pitch.
As well as that, the Whites academy graduate is aggressive off the ball with his defensive work.
Ayling is blown away by Phillips’ improvement under Argentine boss during the past few years.
“When I first came five years ago Kalvin was a number 10, bit of a number eight box-to-box,” Ayling told Soccer AM.
“The first day the gaffer (Bielsa) came in he told Kalvin ‘no, you’re going to be a number four. You’re going to get on the ball and play’. Straight away he took to it.
“He’s grown into it. He’s slimmed down a bit. He can cover the ground. He can pass the ball short. He can go long. He can find a pass. He’s got everything.”
Leeds now have a squad stacked with top-class talent, but Phillips will be the pick of the bunch in some people’s eyes.
The England international has been a devastating miss whenever he’s been missing on the pitch through injury for the Yorkshire giants, and teammates struggle to fill in for his specialist midfield role.
His all-round game has no obvious flaw, with Bielsa deserving so much credit for the way he’s helped elevate him to the heights of international football.
