Luke Ayling reacts to Patrick Bamford Instagram post after England debut
Luke Ayling has congratulated Patrick Bamford on Instagram after the Leeds United striker took to social media to comment on making his England debut on Sunday.
Bamford started up front for Gareth Southgate’s side as they faced Andorra in their latest World Cup qualifier at the weekend.
It proved to be a successful occasion for the Three Lions. They won 4-0 at Wembley to put one foot at next year’s World Cup.
For Bamford, it was perhaps not the showcase he would have dreamed of. He was given little to work with in terms of chances. And he was replaced just after the hour mark.
Nevertheless, it would seem that nothing is going to dampen Bamford’s mood.
His debut has arguably been a long time coming. And it just so happens that Bamford made his international bow on the day of his 28th birthday.
It has been an amazing couple of years for the Leeds striker. After coming in for criticism during the Whites’ Championship title win, Bamford emphatically silenced his doubters last season.
Some felt that he should have got a chance at Euro 2020. But it was clearly better late than never for the forward.
And amongst those to praise Bamford on Instagram was his Leeds teammate Ayling…
Bamford now needs to set sights on retaining England place after debut
Bamford has probably benefitted from Southgate being unable to call upon Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ollie Watkins.
Both were in the provisional squad for Euro 2020 ahead of the Leeds man.
So his challenge is now clear: show for Leeds that he deserves to be ahead of the pair when Southgate has his pick of the attacking players once again.
