Illan Meslier has impressed Leeds United fans both on and off the pitch since breaking into Marcelo Bielsa’s side of late – and Luke Ayling has told the club’s Instagram TV page that he was surprised by the young goalkeeper after he joined.
Meslier, 20, agreed a loan-to-buy deal to join Leeds last summer from French second-tier side Lorient. The Mirror have claimed that Leeds are set to activate the clause in his current deal, which is expected to set the Whites back about £5million.
It comes after the France Under-20 international came into the side to replace Kiko Casilla, who was handed an eight-match ban for racially abusing Charlton Athletic attacker Jonathan Leko. He has kept two clean sheets in two league games.
Not only has he impressed on the pitch and for the Under-23 side, Meslier has also impressed Leeds fans off of it – even sending a message to young supporter Nate after a video went viral on Twitter this week.
Asked about who was the funniest player in the Leeds squad, Ayling spoke of how the young Frenchman surprised him with his sense of humour, claiming not many had expected that from Meslier.
“I’m going to say the big goalie,” Ayling said. “He’s come in this year and I feel like he’s so dry. He’s just so funny, some of the stuff he comes out with. I think I’ll go with Illan for the simple fact that nobody thinks he would be like that.”
There are small doubts beginning to creep in over Meslier’s future at Elland Road, given that with nine games to play – it remains to be seen if the French star will be able to play given his loan deal ends on June 30.
Leeds may opt to sign Meslier permanently in the near future in order to keep the goalkeeper at Elland Road beyond the end of his current loan spell. But certainly, Leeds fans are desperate for the French youngster to remain in Yorkshire.
