Luka Modric has told FourFourTwo – as per the Mail – that he feels he is too old to follow Gareth Bale back to Tottenham Hotspur from Real Madrid, having entered the final year of his contract.
Modric, 35, remains a crucial part of a Real Madrid side that have stuttered at the beginning of the season under Zinedine Zidane. Real did beat Barcelona away from home on the weekend, with Modric scoring in a 3-1 win.
However, they have just one point from their opening two Champions League games. Modric is now in his ninth season at Madrid, having left Tottenham in the summer of 2012 to join the La Liga champions for £33million (Mail).
But his future is in doubt after entering the final year of his contract at Real. Modric was asked by FourFourTwo if he would consider returning to Spurs and follow Bale, but Modric wants to stay at Real – saying he is too old for Spurs.

“I’m too old to go back to Tottenham,” Modric said, as per the Mail. “I still have a year left in Madrid and then we’ll see what happens. I feel good and I want to continue playing football for a few more years.
“I am focused on Madrid. I will sit down to talk to the management, and we will look for a suitable solution. I have forged a good relationship with all the people of the club and no matter what happens there will be no problem.”
TBR’s view – Modric is still easily good enough for Tottenham
Modric’s modesty is commendable, but he can still easily play for a club like Tottenham. Given that he is still a regular at Real Madrid and wants to stay with the Spanish side beyond the summer, clearly he is still good enough.
Should Spurs sign him? If a player of Modric’s ability becomes available – a player that won the 2018 Ballon d’Or – then you must consider him. His ties with Spurs, available on a free for a short-term deal? Surely a no-brainer?
